Bioturf was started by Gary Niemeyer as an alternative to conventional toxic NPK fertilizersand pesticides.  Gary graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in agriculture and studied soil science.  After graduating he worked in fertilizer sales with a Fortune 500 company.  While at the university Gary was introduced to the research of Dr. Wm A. Albrect, the noted Missouri soil scientist whose work had shown the importance of soil microbes and calcium.  Dr Albrect was alarmed at the new chemistry of the synthetic fertilizer NPK and pesticides.  He found this technology to be detrimental to soil fertility and human health.  His work had led to the organic food movement and a widespread increase in organic farming.  

 Gary has shown that turfgrass problems can be corrected with these same methods, and that soil fertility and plant health can be greatly improved.
